The Gospel of John 5:16-30
If you remember from my last post from the gospel of John, then you will remember that Jesus has just healed a crippled man on the Sabbath. Many people will accept that Jesus is a great moral teacher. This is another passage that you can point to, in order to expose the silliness of their claim. Jesus has just broken the Sabbath by healing a man. The religious leaders come to him to rebuke him for breaking the law. He says to them that his Father is always working, and so am I. This may not strike you as it would a first century Jew. God would never be referred to as the Father prior to the ministry of Jesus. What Jesus was saying by referring to God as his Father is to put himself on the same level as God. The religious leaders were furious. Jesus has committed blasphemy, because he was claiming to be God. He also says that the Son only does what he sees the Father doing. The Father loves his Son and shows him everything. He also says that the Father has given the authority to judge to the Son. Not only has Jesus claimed to be God, but he has also claimed authority to judge that would only belong to God. He instructs them that they should honor the Son. He says if anyone would not honor the Son, than they are dishonoring the Father. This is another claim by Jesus of being equal to God.
How could a person who claims to be God, also be a great moral teacher? It simple doesn't add up. C.S. Lewis said that everyone must decide that Jesus is either the Lord, a Liar, or a Lunatic. There is no in between. I have already made my decision on this issue. Have you? Who is Jesus to you? This is the most important question you will ever face in your life. The wrong answer could cost you an eternity separated from God. The thing that I love about the words of Jesus, is that he never leaves anything in gray. He is truth, and so he speaks completely clear truth. If you will read the words of Jesus, then you will have no question about who he claimed to be. He doesn't leave anything unclear.
